Professor Tomas Ekström

Dr Tomas Ekström is a Professor of Molecular Cellbiology at Karolinska Institututet in Stockholm, is a pioneer in the epigenetic field since the early 1990s.

Dr Ekström took his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1987 at the Stockholm University, after which he spent three years at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) doing molecular biology research. After his return to Sweden in 1990, he started his own research on growth factor regulation which ended up in work on the new field of epigenetics.

Dr Ekström has worked on epigenetic aspects in many fields such as cancer, alcoholism, psychiatric disorders and rheumatoid arthritis. His scientific contribution to the epigenetics of autoimmune disease has been internationally renowned, and has paved the way for better understanding the interplay between epigenetic mechanisms and the underlying genetic primary DNA code.
